Cal McCarthy, University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)
Title: Facilities & Operations Coordinator
Years in Current Position: 3
Years as a NIRSA Member: 6-7
Years in Collegiate Recreation: 6-7
Statement #1--What NIRSA PIRSA or organiztional experience do you have that makes you the best candidate to move PIRSA forward?
During my time in Campus Recreation I have been fortunate to hold varies roles within PIRSA & NIRSA and have been a NIRSA Member dating back to 2019. Previously to arriving at Pitt in 2022, During my G.A. years in Region 2 I served on the Student Lead On Team for the All Regions Conference in 2021. Since arriving at Pitt I have been on two Region 1 committees and have been a Co-Chair and Chair for each perspective Committee. In addition to my experience at the regional level I have also been fortunate to get some national experience with serving on the Host Committee in 2023 when hosting the annual conference in Pittsburgh along with this past year I was a graduate from NIRSA School (2024) Currently at the state level, I am serving as the outgoing Member Engagement Chair of PIRSA. All of these roles have given me various different experiences that I felt have helped mold me into the professional I am today along with the day to day work I have been apart of working in Facilities and Operations these past 3 years professionally.
Statement #2--What experience do you bring to the position you are applying for?
Having had the pleasuring of serving on the PIRSA board from 22-24. I have been apart of some really great initiatives at the state level with this group of board members. With bringing in person workshops back, to connecting with members at regional conferences. Part of the successes that we have had, is what is driving me to want to come back and continue to serve on the board and the state of PA. I've enjoyed my role as the member engagement chair, but I would like to be apart of some more responsibility and I feel that having some PIRSA board experience along with various Regional leadership opportunities pushes my into the right direction for President of PIRSA. With the support of the other board members I want to provide a servant leadership to the state of PA and continue to push initiatives that share the wealth of knowledge among the strong professional we have in the state. One initiative I would like to propose as PIRSA president is establishing a Conference schedule on a 5 year basis with a one year on one year off model. On Years off we would focus on having events just not a workshop. This will hopefully allow the State Workshops to thrive on a every other year format but also allow schools to plan if they would attend and/or host.
