Our History
Building a legacy of leadership and recreational excellence in the Commonwealth since 1998.
The Spark of Unity
In 1998, Dr. Frank Condino from IUP approached Terry Dougherty with a critical observation: Pennsylvania schools lacked involvement, and talented young professionals and students were increasingly leaving the Commonwealth for other areas.
After researching how other states promoted unity, Frank proposed a unifying solution: that the state of Pennsylvania join together to form PIRSA—the Pennsylvania Intramural and Recreational Sports Association.
The PIRSA Vision
PIRSA was founded to allow both smaller institutions and larger schools to have a unified voice on state matters as they pertain to NIRSA. By offering a dedicated venue for young professionals and students, PIRSA created a space to present and hear valuable research that promotes and enhances the quality of recreational sports programs throughout the state.
Through professional meetings and the dissemination of ideas, PIRSA maintains policies consistent with the philosophy of NIRSA while providing the vital ability to network directly within the state.
Formalizing the Foundation
The Constitution and By-Laws were sent to all NIRSA members in Pennsylvania, and official paperwork was completed to establish PIRSA as a recognized State Association.
Honoring a Legend: Bill Swan
During the association's formation, the Pennsylvania recreation community lost a well-known, long-time leader. Bill Swan from Penn State University Park passed away at the age of 59, after close to 35 years of dedicated service.
The Bill Swan Award: In his honor, PIRSA established an annual award for dedication given to a Pennsylvania student. This honor is supported by PIRSA, Alan from Sayings for You, and Penn State University, which maintains a perpetual plaque on campus.
Extramural Growth
The Fall of 2008 marked a new era of competition with the creation of the PIRSA Extramural Tournaments for Flag Football and Basketball.
The PIRSA Championships were designed as cost-effective tournaments for both hosts and participants, further strengthening the bond between Pennsylvania institutions.
